[Editorial] Reflecting on lessons from the 2014–16 Ebola virus outbreak

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the 2014–16 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa, which was the seventh EVD outbreak and largest to date. The three most affected countries were Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Additional cases were reported in Italy, the UK, Senegal, Mali, the USA, Spain, and Nigeria. The devastation caused was unprecedented. In total, 28 600 people were infected and 11 325 died. A significant number of deaths also occurred from non-Ebola causes, due to the breakdown of fragile and overburdened health-care systems.
