Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare, progressive, and ultimately fatal neurodegenerative disease that causes loss of upper and lower motor neurons, leading to a progressive decrease in muscle mass, strength, and function of bulbar, respiratory and limb muscles, typically resulting in paralysis and eventually death from respiratory failure.
